Blast furnace gas measurement during operation and combustion air measurement in large pipelines in gas power plants

ArcelorMittal is one of the world's largest steel producers and operates a steel mill in Ghent, Belgium. In 2011, a new 300 MW power plant was built in Ghent, which will run on blast furnace gas. The measurement of the blast furnace gas produced during steel production, which can be used to generate electricity and heat, is of particular importance here.

A special challenge in the realization of the blast furnace gas quantity measurements was the requirement to install them during operation. Based on our extensive experience in this field, the plant operator decided to use our FASTLOK sensors. All 30 required measurements could be installed without any problems to the customer's satisfaction and since then have provided reliable measured values.

Equipment of the new power plant:

  • 15 SDF sensors for combustion air measurements (DN 1700, 380 °C, 60 000 m3/h)
  • 30 SDF FASTLOK sensors for flow measurements in blast furnace gas and installation without interruption of ongoing operation (DN 1200, 250 °C, 60 000 m3/h)

The customer also decided to use our probes for combustion air measurements, as they are easy to install, even in large pipelines, and offer a significant cost advantage.

Conclusion: "With this project we were again able to prove successfully that competent measurement technology is not just a slogan for us, even under difficult conditions.
